We believe in minimal data collection. UbuntuPlay uses only essential session cookies — no advertising trackers, no cross-site tracking, no analytics cookies.
UbuntuPlay uses only essential session cookies for authentication on the Hub. We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or any third-party behavioural analytics. No consent banner is required for essential cookies under most privacy frameworks.
Our platform is designed for use in schools, often with students who are minors. We take a privacy-by-default approach: we collect and store only what is strictly necessary to deliver the service.
In addition to cookies, UbuntuPlay uses browser local storage and cache storage for functional purposes:
| Storage Key | Type | Purpose | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gogo AI WASM model cache | Functional | Caches the downloaded Gemma 4 E2B WASM model files in the browser's Cache Storage to enable offline AI inference. This is a large (200–700 MB) one-time download that avoids re-downloading the model on each visit. | Classroom Teacher Browser |
uplay_locale |
Functional | Remembers your selected language (e.g., English, Bemba, Nyanja, Tonga, Lozi) for game and UI display. Persists your preference across sessions. | Classroom & Hub |
Service Worker cache (uplay-classroom-v*) |
Functional | The Classroom Server registers a Service Worker to cache static assets (HTML, CSS, JS, fonts, game assets) for offline use. This enables the Classroom to load even when the device has no internet connectivity. | Classroom Browser |
| Game state (session storage) | Functional | Individual game pages may use session storage to save in-progress game state (e.g., current level, score) so a page refresh does not lose your progress. Cleared when the browser tab is closed. | Classroom Browser |
None of the above local storage data is transmitted to external servers. It is stored entirely on your device.
Some pages on the Hub (ubuntuplay.fly.dev) load resources from third-party servers. These third parties may set their own cookies:
| Third Party | Resource | Cookies / Data |
|---|---|---|
| Google Fonts (fonts.gstatic.com) | Third-party | Hub pages load DM Sans and Fraunces fonts from Google's CDN. Google may log your IP address and browser details when serving these font files. Google states it does not use font requests for advertising. The Classroom Server self-hosts all fonts — no Google requests. |
| Flutterwave (api.flutterwave.com) | Third-party | When you initiate a payment, you are redirected to Flutterwave's payment page. Flutterwave handles the payment in their own environment and may set their own cookies on their domain. These are governed by Flutterwave's Privacy Policy. |
UbuntuPlay does not use:
We do not sell, rent, or share cookie data with any third party for commercial purposes.
Since we only use essential cookies, most browser cookie-blocking settings will not affect your core experience. However, if you block the session cookie, you will not be able to stay logged in to the Hub portals.
You can clear your session by signing out from any Hub portal (the sign-out button appears in the navigation). This invalidates your server-side session and clears the session cookie.
To clear the Gogo AI model cache or Service Worker cache, you can:
Note: clearing the AI model cache will require re-downloading the Gemma model (200–700 MB) on the next session.
Most browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. For instructions, see:
